IMAM Cambodia.Relief.Mission 2010

the. experience was priceless

its already been 3 weeks. But still.. the memory of cambodia and its people are still fresh in our memory.

we learnt a lot from the mission indeed. from the cambodian comrades (IMAC), from the hardships that we went thru since the very 1st day (to be exact before the flight..  i mean RIGHT before the flight. soon we will tell the story in the next post.. hehe) 

we also learnt a lot from the sufferings they endure.

i once took this one old man’s weight, he’s on his 70s but surprisingly he is only 30kg something. i told him him to eat more blablabla (using a translator la hehe.) and the old man said.. “where to get food?? no money….. “

i turned speechless.

the old man was not the only one. they were many like him and most of them were elderly people.

i also saw this one kid walking on his bare feet and i asked him, “why dont u wear ur slipper? its dirty .. later got infection blablabla..” and he replied.. “no slipper..”

and there were many like that kid.

sometimes because we used to live too comfortably in malaysia thus we lack the sense of understanding on how poor their lives could possibly be. 

we realised that the mobile clinic was only a short term kind of service as well as the small amount of donations to the villagers that might be used up only after two weeks. but we are hoping that the sincerity and the hopes that we were trying to put across will help them to endure future difficulties.

the. missions

MEDICAL RELIEF

1. Medical - mobile clinic
2. Medical check up and treatment - blood pressure, body temperature, height, weight, pulse rate, cardiovascular examination
3. Antenatal advice and paediatric care
4. To distribute available medications (provided by the team) to those in need - antibiotics, vitamins and healthcare products
5. To assist doctors in minor surgeries - circumcisions, trauma and labour
6. Educational - family hygiene and sanitation, woman health, child healthcare, dental care

SOCIAL RELIEF

1. Donations - blanket, clothes, food, formulated milk, self care and dental care products, books (including religious materials), school bags, stationeries and health supplement (e.g vitamins)
2. Community Work - visits to villages, local schools and orphanage (interactive sessions, general health awareness, mini library, cleaning up, reading and quranic lessons)

the. objectives

For Cambodians

1. To provide free basic humanitarian and medical services with emphasis on women and children
2. To increase medical awareness on issues such as family planning, sexually transmitted diseases and basic hygiene.
3. Continuation of previous years’ Relief Mission to Cambodia

For student volunteers

1. To introduce students to the field of relief work
2. To allow students to experience real life problems and issues and tackle them appropriately
3. To provide a training ground for students to work under pressure and working in teams
4. To fulfil the elective requirements of clinical year students
